Linking to the Curriculum
The Osaka Cup Yacht Race occurs in an
environment that undergoes significant change during the
course of the race - the Pacific Ocean. Here is an opportunity
for students to learn more about the maritime environment.
Students will learn through the series of 4 activities about
the natural processes that cause change to the environment
and investigate the ways that people use and interact with
the environment. Case studies of particular yachts in the
race will allow students to focus on the local area in which
the yacht is sailing and the regional scale of the area
through which the yacht sails on its way to Japan.
Students will learn about the extent to which people and
environments affect each other. The on board perceptions
of the yachtsmen to their environment and their fellow sailors
will become evident in the case studies. En route maps tracking
the path of yachts will show each yachts response
to the environment and the change over time in their response
to the environment. No-one entering the race knows how the
environment will affect them at the outset, but each yacht
undertakes a variety of experiences along its route and
responds accordingly to the impact of each event.
With the possibilities of the unpredictable occurring, awareness
of safety issues and international response regulations
and organisations are necessary.
